2021 and COVID-19 Emergency Grants

In 2021, the Board of Directors of the Franklin Square House Foundation made a policy decision to continue its grant making activities in the “COVID emergency grant” mode. In February, the Foundation made an additional 42 grants totaling $300,000 to existing grantees that are providing congregate or dormitory shelter to women and their families.

In February, along with the 42 emergency shelter grants, we made six $25,000 grants for food to existing grantees that operate pantries and/or food distribution to support families in need. While this emergency grant making is both temporary and entirely new territory for the Foundation, we feel it is a highly impactful way to directly help families in need. These six food grants were made to:

Family Aid Boston (Boston)

Lazarus House (Lawrence)

Plymouth Area Coalition for the Homeless (Plymouth)

Rosie’s Place (Boston)

Woburn Council for Social Concern (Woburn)

United South End Settlements (Boston)

Additionally, the Foundation will remain open for emergency capital grants for existing shelter and childcare grantees on a rolling basis. We are specifically targeting emergency repair needs that, if not undertaken immediately, would lead to the loss of the safe and secure shelter and childcare services for the families our existing grantees serve.

2020 and COVID-19 Emergency Grants

Since April 2020, the Foundation has been in “COVID emergency grant” mode. We focused all of our energy and efforts on working with our existing grantees to assist in the management of COVID-19-related needs.  During 2020, the Foundation made 71 small unrestricted grants to help housing/shelter and childcare groups manage the immediate effects of the Pandemic on the women and families they serve.

Forty-five of the emergency grants were to existing shelter grantees that house women and families living in congregate or dormitory settings.  An additional 26 grants were made to existing childcare grantees that certified a reopening date of their centers no later than September 1, 2020.  In total, the Foundation awarded $355,000 in COVID related emergency funding in 2020.

In addition to the unrestricted emergency grants, the Foundation remained open, on a rolling basis, for emergency capital needs grants for existing grantees.  These capital grants were targeted to groups that had emergency capital repair needs, that if not undertaken immediately, would lead to the loss of the safe and secure services for the women and children that they serve.  During the Summer and Fall, the Foundation made five emergency grants totaling $126,856.
